How to play4

Before you start

Give each station one single stack of 36 cups on a level table. Check the table does not wobble — a wobbly table ends the game in the first ten seconds.

  1. 1On go, build a pyramid: 8 cups in the bottom row, then 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 on top.
  2. 2Once the top cup is placed, take the pyramid down and gather all 36 cups back into one stack.
  3. 3If the pyramid collapses, rebuild from wherever it fell.
  4. 4First player to finish with a single stack wins. If nobody finishes, the tallest complete pyramid wins.
What to say3
  1. 1“Thirty-six cups, eight on the bottom, all the way to one on top — and then back down!”
  2. 2“Steady hands! Don't breathe on it!”
  3. 3“The top cup's on! Now tear it down — single stack!”
Host tips3
  • Air-conditioning vents and electric fans knock over the top rows. Check where the air blows before you place the tables.
  • Nearly nobody finishes 36 cups in a minute on the first try. Decide before you start how you'll rank people who don't finish — tallest full row wins — so there's no argument at the buzzer.
  • Thin cups stick together when unstacking. Pre-separate and re-stack them loosely once before the party.
Variants2
  • Kids' pyramid

Use 10 cups (4-3-2-1) or 21 cups (6-5-4-3-2-1) for younger players.

  • Pairs

Two players share one pyramid but each may use only one hand.

Safety1
  • Spectators crowding the table will bump it — mark a line on the floor they stay behind.
