Before you start
Clear a dance floor and form a big circle of spectators around it. Split the room into teams, or let volunteers sign up in pairs.
- 1The host plays a surprise song; one team dances in the circle for 30 seconds.
- 2The next team answers with the next song.
- 3After every team has danced, the crowd cheers for each; the quietest team is out.
- 4Repeat until the last two teams face off in a final.
What to say3
- 1“Thirty seconds — show us what you've got!”
- 2“Ooh, they're answering with the cha-cha! Respond!”
- 3“Make some noise for team one… now team two!”
Host tips3
- Team battles work; solo battles do not. In a team, the shy person can sway at the back — a solo call-out embarrasses people who did not volunteer.
- Mix genres wildly. A surprise slow ballad or old-school disco in the middle gets the biggest reactions.
- The noise meter or a neutral judge settles disputes — cheer contests tend to favour the biggest team.
Variants2
Copy-cat
One team leads a move and the other must copy it, then add a move of their own.
Generations battle
Titos and titas vs. the kids. Each side picks songs for the other. Loud and very funny.
Safety3
- Ask dancers to remove heels or play on a non-slip floor.
- Keep the spectator circle wide; breakdance spins and flailing arms hit faces.
- Seniors and pregnant guests should judge, not dance, if moves get acrobatic.
