Before you start
Mark a 10–20 m straight course on grass. Let players choose their own partners and tie each pair's inner ankles together snugly but not tight.
- 1Pairs line up at the start, arms around each other's waist or shoulders.
- 2On “Go!”, they race to the finish line moving the tied legs together.
- 3If the tie comes loose, the pair stops, reties it and carries on.
- 4First pair with both bodies across the line wins.
What to say3
- 1“Inside legs together — that's your 'middle leg'!”
- 2“Count it out: middle, outside, middle, outside — GO!”
- 3“Pair 4 found their rhythm — look at them fly!”
Host tips3
- Pairs that sprint fall in the first 3 m. Tell everyone to count 'middle, outside' together out loud — the steady pairs always win.
- Assigning partners at an office or mixed party is awkward because of the arm-around contact. Let people pick their partner, or pair family members and same-gender friends.
- Tie at the ankle, not the knee. Ties above the ankle twist knees when pairs fall.
Variants2
Four-legged race
Three players tied in a row. Slower, funnier, more falls — kids and teens only.
Relay
Pairs race to a cone and back and tag the next pair on their team.
Safety4
- Falls are almost certain: grass or sand only, and short courses.
- Use soft cloth ties that can slip off — never rope, cable ties or anything that tightens.
- Pair people of similar height and weight; mismatched pairs fall harder.
- Not for seniors or pregnant guests.
