How to play4

Before you start

Print one full set per team so everyone can work at once. Seal each puzzle in a numbered envelope; the host checks each answer before handing over the next envelope.

  1. 1Teams open envelope 1 and solve the puzzle inside.
  2. 2They bring the answer to the host; a correct answer earns the next envelope.
  3. 3Each team may cash in up to 3 hint cards.
  4. 4The first team to give the final code escapes. Others keep going until the time limit.
What to say3
  1. 1“You have 40 minutes to escape. Envelope one — open it!”
  2. 2“Halfway! Remember, you have hint cards — use them.”
  3. 3“We have our first escapees! Everyone else, ten minutes left!”
Host tips3
  • Playtest the whole chain with someone who did not write it. Puzzles always seem obvious to their author, and one unsolvable step stalls every team at the same envelope.
  • Print enough copies. Six adults cannot crowd around one sheet of paper — two will solve and four will watch.
  • Debrief: ask who held information and whether they shared it, who stayed quiet, and how the team decided which puzzle to work on. The point is to see how information moves in the group.
Variants2
  • Santa's locked workshop

Christmas theme: the elves have locked Santa out and the final code opens a box of gifts.

  • Split information

Give different team members different clue cards that only make sense together. Forces quiet people to speak.
