Before you start

Find a flat, non-slip area about 8 m long. Pick two turners to hold the rope ends and have the jumpers line up to one side.

  1. 1The turners swing the rope in big, even circles.
  2. 2Jumpers run in one at a time and jump until they miss, or for a set count of 10 or 20 jumps, then run out.
  3. 3A jumper who stops the rope swaps with a turner.
  4. 4Increase the challenge each round: two jumpers at once, turning faster, or jumping in from the other side.

  1. 1“Turners, nice big circles — jumpers, wait for the rope to hit the ground and GO!”
  2. 2“Count with me: one, two, three, four…”
  3. 3“Two jumpers at once — who's brave enough?”
Host tips3
  • Uneven turning is what makes people trip, not bad jumping. Put your two most rhythmic people on turning first and have the whole group count out loud to keep the beat.
  • Shy kids and adults won't run in. Start with the rope swinging side to side low on the ground (“snake”) so everyone gets a first easy jump.
  • Turners get bored and quit. Rotate turners every 3 minutes even if nobody misses.

  • Rising rope

    The Filipino height game: the two holders keep the rope still and raise it each round — ankle, knee, waist — and players must jump over without touching it.

  • Team count

    Teams take turns getting as many members as possible jumping in the rope at once. Biggest group to clear 5 jumps wins.

Safety3
  • Keep spectators at least 2 m back from the rope's arc; a fast rope can whip faces.
  • Turners must not wrap the rope around their hands.
  • Jump on flat ground without stones or wet tiles; ankle sprains are the main injury.
