How to play4

Before you start

Form circles of 8–12 people standing shoulder to shoulder. More players means multiple circles, not one bigger one.

  1. 1Everyone reaches into the middle and takes the right hand of someone across the circle.
  2. 2Then everyone takes a left hand from a different person — not the same one, not a neighbour.
  3. 3Without letting go, the group steps over, ducks under and turns until it forms one circle.
  4. 4Loosening a grip to rotate a wrist is allowed; letting go is not.
What to say3
  1. 1“Right hand in — grab someone across from you!”
  2. 2“Now your left hand — a different person! No neighbours!”
  3. 3“Don't let go! Over, under, through — find your circle!”
Host tips3
  • This is hand-holding and close contact. Fine for kids and youth groups who already know each other; with new hires or mixed-gender adult groups that are not close, use the rope version or pick another game.
  • Some knots cannot be solved and end up as two linked circles. If a group is stuck after 8 minutes, let them break and re-grip one pair of hands rather than letting frustration build.
  • Debrief: ask who started giving directions, whether anyone's idea got ignored because they were stuck in the middle, and how the group recovered when two people pulled opposite ways.
Variants2
  • Rope knot

Each player holds one end of a 1-metre rope instead of a hand. Less contact, same puzzle — better for adults who do not know each other.

  • Silent knot

No talking allowed. Forces the group to lead with gestures.

Safety3
  • Twisted wrists and shoulders are the main risk — anyone in pain lets go and re-grips.
  • No climbing over people or lifting anyone.
  • Not for seniors, people with back or shoulder problems, or pregnant guests — give them the observer role.
